Believer or Disciple

Believer or Disciple of Jesus

Jesus did not say, “Go make believers.” Jesus declared, “Go make disciples.”

Believers are more often not disciples but a disciple of Jesus is always a believer. A disciple of Jesus is one who is being taught by God to share in the sufferings of Jesus at all times.

One can believe in Jesus without being a disciple of Jesus. Indeed, Cultural Christianity believers are not disciples of Jesus.

However, such are not saved. If you asked Jesus into your heart as your personal Lord and Savior, you have been short-changed, cheated and most likely not saved. Such cultural Christianity is a whitewashed version of a faith that comes from obedience. As declares:

  • Romans 1:5 Through him and for his name’s sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith.

Whereas all disciples of Jesus are true believers because they are following and being taught by Jesus at all times. A Jesus that will always require total surrender while moving you toward the cross.

In short, a disciple of Jesus is walking as Jesus walked because they are following Jesus as He leads.

  • John 2:6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

Disciple Of Jesus

Believers who have with deep conviction of sin, deny themselves, daily pick up a cross as they hate and lose their own life to follow the voice of Jesus unto ever-deepening death to self are the only individuals being saved.

  • Luke 9:23 Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

Calling On The Lord

Simple Believers are not able to call on the name of the Lord because they do not hate their own life. Disciples who honestly believe Jesus call on the Living God every day, all day and night and because of their obedience by faith have the full experience of being saved. Like Jesus they are heard because their life, in body, soul, spirit and mind is overflowing with obedience.

  • Romans 1:5 Through him and for his name’s sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith.

Believe in Heart & Confess With Mouth Meaning

Romans 10 used to ask Jesus into one’s heart, trusting Him to be their personal Lord, and Savior is reserved only for disciples of Jesus. One is not saved by saying the believer’s prayer.

  • Romans 10:8-12 But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”

The full gospel call of believing in Jesus is to become a disciple of Jesus. We see this complete gospel message in the salvation of Paul. Note it is only after Paul washes away his sins in water baptism that he is allowed to call on His name.

  • Acts 22:10-17 What shall I do, Lord?’ I asked. ” ‘Get up,’ the Lord said, ‘and go into Damascus. There you will be told all that you have been assigned to do.’ My companions led me by the hand into Damascus, because the brilliance of the light had blinded me. “A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there. He stood beside me and said, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ And at that very moment I was able to see him. “Then he said: ‘The God of our fathers has chosen you to know his will and to see the Righteous One and to hear words from his mouth. You will be his witness to all men of what you have seen and heard. And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.’ “When I returned to Jerusalem and was praying at the temple, I fell into a trance.

The example above is the same gospel message that was first preached after Jesus was resurrected.

  • Acts 2:36-41 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off–for all whom the Lord our God will call.” With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
