Cultural Christianity Defined
Cultural Christianity is characterized by a belief in Jesus that emerges from engaging with the Bible, attending sermons, reading commentaries, and being shaped by a religious environment. This faith in Jesus originates from worldly influences, enabling individuals to maintain their lifestyles while superficially claiming Jesus as Lord. However, such a faith falls short of genuine salvation. It sharply contrasts with the full gospel message, which calls for complete surrender, a readiness to bear one’s cross, and a commitment to follow the Holy Spirit—even in ways that may be uncomfortable or challenge personal beliefs. Essentially, those who practice cultural Christianity often lack an understanding of the actual demands of the cross.
Those surrendering, growing and upholding the whole gospel have only one message, one life and one focus.
For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.
A Few Examples
The following is firmly rooted in Scripture, and if you are not familiar with the reference, now is the time to be blessed2 by God and delve deeper into His Word and obedience by letting Jesus show you how to pick up your cross in relationship to the commands of God.
- 2 Corinthians 13:5
Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you–unless, of course, you fail the test?

As for those who seemed to be important–whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not judge by external appearance–those men added nothing to my message. Galatians 2:6
Salt Being Thrown Out
Jesus warned that if we soften the demands of the crucified life that at some point our gospel calls become worthless. So worthless Jesus declared it would be thrown out. Note well the following passage of Scripture is so whitewashed, watered down and explained away that there is very little saltiness, if any, left in the American Church. After all, when was the last time you heard a discussion among "Christians" on how to, and how they are, hating their father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters while hating their own life? Naw, never. What you do hear is it being explained away and ignored. Indeed, it is no longer even in the gospel calls for salvation. Side note: a disciple of Jesus while carrying his, or her cross, as to "hate" and "despise" money. And when was the last time you saw that lived out let alone preached?
"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters–yes, even his own life–he cannot be my disciple. And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
"Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.’
"Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.
In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.
"Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out. "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." Luke 14:26-35
