Washington Governor Activates National Guard to Counter Potential Election Violence
Washington Gov. Jay Inslee has activated the National Guard to be on standby to assist law enforcement amid election-related violence concerns.

National Guard Deployed by Washington Governor in Response to Possible Election-Related Unrest

Washington Governor, Jay Inslee, has called for the activation of the National Guard in anticipation of possible violence during the upcoming election. This decision was made in Seattle on March 11, 2020.

Washington Governor Jay Inslee has called on the National Guard to be ready to assist local and state law enforcement if there is any violence related to the election.

According to Governor Inslee’s announcement on November 1, the deployment of the Washington National Guard members is a purely precautionary measure. This decision was made in response to warnings from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security regarding potential violence during the 2024 election cycle. The department also highlighted the possibility of foreign interference targeting election infrastructure.

The deployment is taking place amidst worries after a recent event in Vancouver, Washington. This incident involved an explosive device that exploded inside a ballot drop box, resulting in the destruction of hundreds of ballots. A similar occurrence was reported in Portland, Oregon, earlier this week.

In a letter to Maj. Gen. Gent Welsh, the adjutant general for Washington state, Inslee stated that he wants to ensure their readiness to handle any potential violence or illegal activity during the 2024 general election, based on both general and specific information and concerns.

According to Inslee, Welsh has been granted the power to decide the number of National Guard members that will be mobilized. The deployment is scheduled to take place over a period of four days, starting from November 4 and concluding shortly after midnight on November 7.

Inslee stated that in order to prepare for possible civil unrest, there will be a need for collaboration among different state agencies and departments. This may involve utilizing additional resources and support roles within the Washington Emergency Management System. It can be inferred that the activation of the National Guard will be a component of a larger, coordinated effort involving various state-level emergency resources to safeguard public safety during the upcoming election.
